CpG islands

Small stretches of DNA that are comparatively rich in CpG nucleotides (i.e. cytosine followed by guanine), frequently located within the promoter region of genes. Methylation within the islands is associated with transcriptional inactivation of the gene, and is hence a mechanism of cell differentiation. Failure of methylation of CpG islands is associated with the initiation of cancer.
